Google Duplex is coming to sell us all the things

We often get robotic, metallic telephone calls that advertise the latest product or telemarketing scams. Because of their unrefined and robotic state, these voices are instantly distinguishable as non human. What if, AI were able to make calls, interact with humans so seamlessly that we were unable to distinguish between robots and humanity? This is where Google Duplex comes in.

Google Duplex

AI has been a concept and an emerging reality that has been a continuous work in progress, has finally reached a new level of almost human like states. Google has just upped the ante with its next generation of AI. Just yesterday at I/O 2018, Sundar Pichai replayed a recording of a phone call to a hair salon. However, this phone call was made by his company’s incredible new AI, Google Duplex, and sounded incredibly realistic and humane. It conversed naturally with the salon, even dropping a casual, “mmhmm.” This amazing development is a huge stride for Google against competitors such as Amazon. However, there are some misgivings and deterrents against this rapid evolution of artificial intelligence. Google, in its AI blog, has some compelling pros in favor.

Businesses that rely on appointment bookings supported by Google Duplex, and are not yet powered by online systems, can benefit from Duplex by allowing customers to book through the Google Assistant without having to change any day-to-day practices or train employees. Using Duplex could also reduce no-shows to appointments by reminding customers about their upcoming appointments in a way that allows easy cancellation or rescheduling.

Google’s own blog also states that: “Businesses that rely on appointment bookings supported by Google Duplex, and are not yet powered by online systems, can benefit from Duplex by allowing customers to book through the Google Assistant without having to change any day-to-day practices or train employees. Using Duplex could also reduce no-shows to appointments by reminding customers about their upcoming appointments in a way that allows easy cancellation or rescheduling.”

We can now predict the opportunities that Google Duplex can provide for both customers and companies. Google’s changing the entire tech world by allowing machines to communicate with people in a more natural manner, and this exciting expansion is surely going to lead to new advancements in the role of machines in our world.
