Brace your Androids. Oreo is coming, though it’s not clear precisely when it will be appearing on devices currently out on market. It’s clear though, that not every device will get the upgrade, especially those that use a customised version of Android. Sorry OPPO users, you’re probably out of luck. But we now know that all new Nokias will get Oreo.
Juho Sarvikas of HMD Global, the front company for Neo-Nokia, has confirmed in a Tweet that: “All of our smartphones will upgrade to Oreo, Nokia 3 included. No comments yet on timing so that I don’t get into trouble.” The Tweet suggests that the currently released products, the new Nokias 3, 5, 6 and the new 8 will get the latest version of Android eventually.
While Mr Sarvikas would not confirm timing, it is hopeful that this upgrade is not too long in the wings. Given that all the HMD Global Nokias run what is essentially vanilla stock Android. It’s been confirmed that Sony will be releasing its upcoming Experia XZ1 and XZ1 Compact with Android Oreo this month.
It’s doubtful that Sony’s competition will want to be left behind in the way of software. As there are more phone manufacturers now moving back towards a more stock version of Android, with less customisation of features and appearance, it might turn out that there will be better software updates and support.
The new Nokias are all looking pretty good. They definitely are solid devices for the price, and the flagship Nokia 8 looks to want to compete against the established goliaths in the smartphone industry. Whether or not the features and/or price match customer expectations is another question though. Time will tell about the success of HMD Global’s resurrection of the famous brand.
