We are definitely getting close to the major product launch season of 2018. We know that Samsung is going to join the fray with its latest Galaxy Note device soon. Apple is also scheduled for new phones in a couple of months. However, we have a new flagship phone coming to market right now; the Oneplus 6, which is a notched smartphone with an all glass exterior.
Oneplus says that the 6 is “its greatest smartphone” so far, and they’ve packed it to the gills with high-end gear. There is a 6.28 inch AMOLED display at a resolution of 2280×1080. The aspect ratio is now 19:9. The main camera system is now a dual Sony system, which can record a full minute of slow motion video (480 frames per second). All of this is driven by (surprise, surprise) a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845.
The other major specifications for the phone are a choice of 6GB or 8GB of DDR4 memory, and a choice of 64GB, 128GB or 256GB of internal storage. The two larger storage versions are only available with the higher RAM capacity as well.
In terms of the exterior, the main change at the front is the notch, following the trend set by other phone companies to increase screen real estate. The configuration of the back is similar to the Oneplus 5, which features the dual camera, and the fingerprint scanner. There is also the choice of black-on-black gloss (Mirror Black) or matte (Midnight Black), and white and rose gold (Silk White) for the colours. However, the white colour option is limited in number, so if you’re after one of those, you’ll probably need to get in on it quickly.
As is usual for Oneplus, the Oneplus 6 will launch initially in India and China. There’s no pricing for the phone just yet. However, the indications are that the Oneplus 5T’s price of US$500 (about AU$750) shouldn’t be too far off what the latest version will be. Given there’s nothing particularly special about the phone specifications, price might be the only point of difference on the Oneplus 6.
